Skin Damage

UV rays have little trouble penetrating through clouds, through clothes, through hair, through water, through most windows. 90% of UV rays are reflected by snow. There are UVA Rays which can accelerate skin aging. And UVB Rays which can cause damaging sunburns. Even extremely dangerous UVC rays. (Fortunately, most UVC rays are blocked before they ever reach us).

Much of the time UV rays are harmless, sometimes even beneficial. But UV light can also wreak havoc on your skin. UV light affects the epidermal cells, penetrating into the dermis where the collagen and elastic tissue give the skin its strength and flexibility. Once damaged, the results are lines and wrinkles, sagging, discoloration, and changes in skin texture including dryness and flaking. But the worrisome part is that much of the damage to our skin is not immediately apparent. Special equipment reveals problems that began in our childhood. The sooner we prevent skin damage, the better our skin will look and feel as we age. 80 percent of damage from sun exposure occurs in childhood and adolescence.

Does this mean we should lock ourselves in darkened rooms, spend vacations exploring caves or wear clothing with a reflective ability akin to armor? Of course not. You may not be able to totally avoid UV rays but there are means of protection: wide brimmed hats, tightly woven loose-fitting clothing, umbrellas, sunglasses, and products containing sunscreens.
